PET/CT The PET/CT is the most advanced medical imaging technique available today. It combines Positron Emmission Tomography (PET) with Computed Tomography (CT).
The CT scan, widely available, allows doctors and therapists to see the body’s fine structural detail in a high quality, high-resolution image. A PET scan offers the ability to detect changes in cell function. The remarkable PET/CT imaging technology manufactured by Siemens Medical allows the Texas Cancer Clinic staff to detect disease earlier and more accurately than other imaging/treatment centers.
This is accomplished by injecting a form of glucose (a crystalline sugar) called FDG into the patient. Rapidly-growing cancer cells consume FDG at a very fast rate and the PET/CT scanner detects the areas of high consumption, mapping them in fine detail to identify both the presence of disease and its precise location.
In addition to being a highly sophisticated tool in the early detection of disease, the PET/CT machine can provide a physician with precise staging and localization of disease progression and allow him or her to accurately monitor the effects of therapy on a patient’s body. The Texas Cancer Clinic is very proud of this equipment as it allows us to provide the best quality of care currently available anywhere in the world.
