MammoSite® RTS offers an alternative to external beam radiation for women who want to conserve the breast. It offers three main benefits:
A shortened course of treatment - Instead of the traditional seven weeks of radiation, MammoSite® RTS requires only five days.
More accuracy when delivering the radiation - At Texas Cancer Clinic, your doctor can achieve greater precision and deliver the dose more directly were it needs to go in the cavity of the tumor. Unlike external beam, where the whole breast is treated, including tissue that likely doesn’t need it. Surrounding organs can also be affected by external beam such as the ribs, the lungs and even the heart. MammoSite® RTS allows your doctor to treat only the area that needs radiation, leaving the healthy surrounding tissue unaffected.
Better tolerated with less discomfort - Overall, MammoSite® RTS is tolerated very well. Of course there may be discomfort after the lumpectomy, but patients have said the balloon catheter does not add much in the way of discomfort. Redness, soreness, inflammation and other common external beam side effects are less commonly associated with the MammoSite® RTS approach.
