Breast Cancer Treatment
MammoSite® RTS

Each year over 250,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer. While this is a frightening statistic, diagnosis doesn’t have to be. With early detection, a lumpectomy - followed by radiation - may be performed allowing the woman to keep her breast as well as her confidence and self-esteem. Traditional external beam radiation treatment following a lumpectomy can take up to seven weeks of radiation therapy, five times a week—a rather lengthy process.

Even today, more than 50 percent of women with early stage breast cancer still choose to have their breast removed through a mastectomy procedure, despite the fact that the recurrence and survival outcomes of a mastectomy versus a lumpectomy with radiation therapy are comparable. The traditional course of lengthy radiation is one of the reasons some women still choose mastectomy.

In an effort to save women the agony of lengthy radiation, Proxima Therapeutics has developed the MammoSite Radiation Therapy System (RTS), a revolutionary method of delivering implanted radiation (brachytherapy) directly to the empty cavity left after a lumpectomy. Short term analysis demonstrates a greater than 97 percent tumor control with MammoSite RTS in the involved breast with a treatment that lasts only five days; two short office visits each day.
