Prostate Cancer Treatment Without Surgery
Brachytherapy
Prostate Brachytherapy is a site-specific internal radiation system for the treatment of prostate cancer, in which radioactive isotopes or seeds are placed in the prostate through needles. The two types of Prostate Brachytherapy are: High Dose Rate (HDR) and Low Dose Rate (LDR) also known as Permanent Seed Implants.
Permanent Seed Implants or LDR means a low dose of radioactive seeds over a longer period of time. The seeds stay in the body. This treatment option is typically for patients with lower risk cancers. This technique is one of Dr. Bradley Prestidge's specialties. (Need to put link here)
High Dose Rate Prostate Implant or HDR is a higher dose of radiation over a shorter period of time. The source temporary; it doesn't stay in the body. HDR is typically for patients with higher risk cancers and is used to treat many other forms of cancer such as breast and lung. In some cases, the actual treatment takes only 5 to 8 minutes.
External Beam Radiation Therapy
External Beam Radiation Therapy or EBT uses a machine called a linear accelerator which delivers precise doses of high energy radiation, targeting the exact area where the tumor exists. EBT is used for all tumor types.
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy
Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy or IMRT is a form of External Beam Therapy using three-dimensional imagery and computerized programming. The system shapes the radiation to the specific size and shape of the tumor. IMRT is the best treatment for irregularly shaped tumors or tumors close to critical tissues. Our gating system recalibrates each time a patient breaths, so the radiation misses vital organs such as the heart and lungs.
3-D Conformal Radiation Therapy
3D conformal radiotherapy indicates that we are using a 3D view and planning software to set our beam’s shape and angle.
